Reader here, and I’m wondering if you felt the rumblings yesterday, after the earthquake that was felt around the Esterhazy area yesterday morning?
According to Earthquakes Canada (an organization I did not know existed until yesterday!), the tremor, which registers 3.4 on the Richter Scale, struck shortly after 7 a.m. yesterday, and was likely due to mining activity.
For their part, Mosaic confirmed the seismic event happened in a mined-out section of its older K3 mine workings, adding comprehensive safety checks have wrapped up, and there were no immediate safety concerns.
People living in the area say there was some shaking that lasted for a few seconds. Before band practice last night, I was chatting with one of our saxophone players, who lives in the area, and he said he definitely felt some shaking!
The important thing is that no one was hurt, and it doesn’t sound like there was anything in the way of damage.
But it got me wondering if any of you have been witness to natural phenomenon like a quake, or some other major event.
The closest thing I’ve seen, is funnel clouds. I remember several years ago, seeing funnel clouds that hadn’t touched down, out the newsroom window, southeast of Yorkton, out past the Cargill terminal.
As well, in 2011, when I went on a cruise, sailing into the Caribbean, out of Miami, Florida, the sea was a bit rough, with high wind and big waves that you could definitely feel aboard the Carnival Liberty. Fortunately, it wasn’t bad enough to give me “Poseidon Adventure” flashbacks, but I did wind up taking a few Gravol, to help keep me from barfing in the cabin from seasickness!
How about you?
Have you ever bore witness to an earthquake? A major tornado? A volcanic eruption, perhaps?
Growing up, some of the major disasters I recall are the “Black Friday” tornado that devastated Edmonton, Alberta in July 1987, as well as the September 1985 earthquake in Mexico City, the 1989 Earthquake in San Francisco, that happened live on TV during a World Series game between the hometown Giants and Oakland A’s.
As well, though I was not quite three years old, and therefore too young to remember any of it, the May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state was another major natural event.
All I can say, is I hope that we not affected in any major way when Mother Nature decides to wreak havoc.
