There are a lot of great things about summertime, whether it’s just getting outside and enjoying the warm sunny weather, hitting the lake, playing a little slow-pitch, going to fairs and Roughrider games, or backyard bonfires with family and friends.
But, you know what else I like?
Grabbing an ice-cold beverage or two, heading to the backyard, and kicking back with a great book.
It’s awesome to be active while enjoying the great outdoors, but sometimes, it’s nice to just relax, and let nature provide the soundtrack to a literary adventure!
I have a whole bunch of books at home. Many I’ve read numerous times, to the point that the pages are getting a bit dog-eared. Some are brand-new, that I bought a while ago, and just haven’t gotten around to reading yet, that are calling my name!
Here’s a couple that are on my summer reading list!
I must say, I’ve been looking forward to reading Josie Balka’s poetry collections, “I Hope You Remember” and “Loves Of Our Lives.” For those longtime listeners, Josie used to be on the airwaves here with us on 94.1, in our previous format. She was a lot of fun to work with, and after moving on to Calgary, to work in radio there, her poetry videos really began to take off on Instagram and TikTok, before she collected her work onto the printed page, and became a New York Times bestselling author! It’s always great to see awesome things happen for awesome people – congrats, Josie!
Beyond those books I mentioned in the video, I have the Tragically Hip’s big-ass book, “This Is Our Life,” which is the story of perhaps Canada’s most iconic band, told in their own words, I have books on Oasis, Steven Tyler, Pete Townshend and other rockers, as well as Star Wars novels, travel books about Korea and Japan, and books about barbecuing, with recipes and tips I plan to put into use this summer!
And I’m sure that I’ll find my way to the library, and pick up a few more to pore through along the way. Because there’s ALWAYS another book, am I right?
Whether it’s autobiographies, books about sports, history, music or pop culture, or a good piece of fiction, I’m always ready to be taken away by a good book.
(Random aside… when reading an autobiography, am I the only one that hears it in the author’s own voice… even when it’s not via audiobook? Arnold Schwarzenegger’s book was fun to read, for just that reason!)
There’s only one thing missing now, to really enjoy a couple of months of outdoor reading… a nice comfy hammock! That might have to be my next investment for backyard enjoyment!
Guess I’ll have to check out Facebook Marketplace, or splurge, and buy one brand-new!
