Reader here! Now previously, I’ve written about my adventures in trying to get to sleep, and how sometimes, insomnia sets in, and I find myself tossing and turning all night.
Today, I’m on the opposite end of the scale, and how sometimes, trying to stay awake can be tough!
As I mentioned, I made a trip home to the farm over the weekend, with my parents and I going into Saskatoon Saturday night, to see the Guess Who concert.
What I didn’t mention, was that on Sunday, we were back in the Bridge City for something very important – my niece Abbie’s dance recital!
She’s graduating high school in a couple of weeks, and this is likely her final recital, so there was no way I was going to miss it.
There was just one problem… It didn’t start until 6:30 on Sunday night.
So me and the fam enjoyed the show, which wrapped up just after 9 p.m.. And then, as you do, you have a bit of a visit with everybody in the venue lobby afterwards, take some pictures, and say your goodbyes. Because I had to get going, as I had to be back at work bright and early Monday morning!
By the time I grabbed a drink and some food for the road, it was 10 after 10 when I got on the highway.
If you’ve made the trip from Saskatoon to Yorkton, you know the trip takes roughly three hours, give or take.
And it was getting later, so I grabbed an energy drink, to help keep me alert.
At the halfway point of the trip, I made a quick pitstop in Dafoe, to answer nature’s call, and grab another beverage – another energy drink.
Oh, and I should add, I also pounded a litre of Coke Zero in between.
Let’s do some math, shall we?
In one can of Full Throttle, there’s 155 milligrams of caffeine. Then, in the can of orange Dreamsicle Reign Energy, there was another 180 milligrams of caffeine. On top of that, in my one litre bottle of Coke Zero, there was roughly another 96 milligrams of caffeine/
That’s just about 440 milligrams of caffeine coursing through my system. Waaaaaaay too much at once!

How much caffeine in a three-hour stretch? TOO MUCH!
On one hand, it was “mission accomplished,” as it kept me wide awake for the entire trip back to Yorkton, as I rolled back into my driveway at 1:15 a.m…. and had to be at work at 4 a.m.!
However, when I laid down and tried to sleep for an hour or two before work, it didn’t go so well.
The ol’ pulse was racing, as you might imagine, and it wasn’t until after being at work for a few hours, that it slowed down and I finally felt back to normal again.
Until then, though, I felt kind of like Apu from “The Simpsons,” when he stayed awake at the Kwik-E-Mart for far too long…
Lesson learned, though. An energy drink once in a while is okay. But to stack a couple back to back, and add extra caffeine into the mix? A bad combo.
As always… everything in moderation!
