Reader here, and with the arrival of June, we are now well and truly into graduation season.
Here in Yorkton, Sacred Heart High School held its graduation ceremony, and my co-worker Danny Ismond across the hall got to celebrate the graduation of his oldest kid. (Congrats, by the way!)
It’s funny to see how time passes. I’ve been in Yorkton for 20 years now, and not only have I watched my nieces and nephew grow up, but I’ve also watched my friends’ kids grow up, and it’s pretty cool to see.
My oldest niece, Sofie, graduated high school last year in Balgonie, and has just wrapped up her first year of university. And I have another niece that is wrapping up high school this year, as my niece Abbie graduates later this month, from St. Joseph’s High School in Saskatoon.
One minute, you’re meeting these adorable little babies for the first time, and the next, they’re young adults, setting off to make their mark in the world, and as tough as it may be sometimes to let them go, we know it’s just part of life, as through the years, they’ve gained the tools they need, to serve them in the big wide world.
It’s natural instinct to want to do everything you can to protect them, and they know you’re always there for them.
But we learn as we go, through trial and error, ups and downs, victories and defeats. Inevitably, there’ll be bumps in the road. It’s the same for every generation.
I graduated from Outlook High School waaaaay back in 1995, and life is still a learning process. We never know it all, as much as we may think we do!
- Little Me in Kindergarten, back in ’82!
- Suave, debonair Grade 12 graduate, 1995!
The important thing is to celebrate milestones like graduation, and realize that it is, as Obi-Wan Kenobi said when Luke Skywalker embarked on his journey to become a Jedi, their “first step into a larger world.”
It’s exciting to think of the possibilties to this year’s graduates, and see where life takes them.
I wish them all the best of luck!
What was your grad song? This was mine! (And congrats again to Janice, the lucky winner of our Cruz FM and OZOON “Flyaway to Bon Jovi “in NYC contest!)
