The Canadian Screen Awards just wrapped up and “Heated Rivalry” basically took over, breaking records with a wild 16 trophies, including best drama series and a big win for Hudson Williams as lead actor. But honestly, the highlight for me was “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie”. The movie snagged six awards, including best lead performance in a comedy for Jay McCarrol and best supporting for Matt Johnson, who also co-wrote and directed it. For my money it’s one of the best Canadian films ever made let alone made this year, and the wins just felt right. As a longtime fan, seeing Nirvanna get celebrated like this is a huge win for weird, creative Canadian filmmaking. My favourite part was the acceptance speech for best original song, which I can honestly say is the first time I’ve heard “this is a national embarassment” in an acceptance speech.
There were also some heartfelt moments, like Sophie Nélisse getting the Radius Award and Mike Myers showing major Canadian pride with his Icon Award speech. Eugene Levy’s tribute to Catherine O’Hara had everyone feeling nostalgic and grateful for Canadian comedy legends. Even though “40 Acres” walked away with the most film awards overall, “Nirvanna” taking the big one felt like a victory for everyone who loves offbeat, ambitious movies. This year’s awards really showed how Canadian TV and film are leveling up, with riskier stories and more diverse voices finally getting center stage. Whether you were into queer hockey romance, Arctic family drama, or time-traveling band chaos, there was something for everyone. The bar has officially been raised for what Canadian screen stories can do. Can’t wait to see what next year brings.
