Reader here, and I spent my Saturday night with the great folks in Swan River, at the 39th annual Swan Valley Sport Fishing Enhancement Fish Fry and Banquet.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – it’s one of my favourite events to be a part of every year. It’s so much fun, with an amazing meal, games, live, silent and ticket auctions, and a boat raffle and 50/50 draw.
The doors opened at 5 p.m., and myself and the team of volunteers got to enjoy our supper beforehand, as we were going to be busy all evening.
Once again, the meal, including all of the delicious fried fish, was prepared by the Natural Resources crew, and as always, it didn’r disappoint!
- Check this out! Some of the best fish you’ll find anywhere, and all the fixins…
- … and it was amazing!
So good! There was also some tasty pork loin, along with cake for dessert.
For everyone who was a bit peckish before supper was served, there was also the hors d’oeuvre table, featuring a variety of smoked fish and crackers for everyone to enjoy, to take away the hunger pangs before supper.

Val was busy serving up appetizers before supper was served!
And when supper was served? The sold-out crowd made for a long line, but it moved quickly, and everyone was able to enjoy the meal.

The line for supper was long, but it moved along nicely!
- Thanks to the Natural Resources crew, who were busy frying up all the delicious fish!
- And thanks to all the volunteers who helped to serve up the meal.
- The night was sold out, and hundreds of hungry people filled their plates!
There were a ton of games for everyone to enjoy as well, from the “Pluck a Fish,” to the Casting Contest, to the ever-popular minnow races, where the stakes get higher as the night goes on, and a few more adult beverages are enjoyed!
- A rare quiet moment at the minnow races! Trust me, it was hoppin’ all night!
- Lots of folks were trying their luck at the “Pluck a Fish,” to have a chance at winning some great prizes!
There were a lot of fantastic items up for grabs in the live, silent, and ticket auctions, with the big crowd getting their bids in and scoring some great deals for a great cause.
Of course the money raised through the evening supports all the endeavours that Swan Valley Sport Fishing Enhancement engages in, from stocking lakes with fish and enhancing spawning habitat, to improving docks, trails and signage, to running youth fishing camps, participating in research projects top maintain healthy waterways and fish stock, to introducing young anglers to a healthy outdoor activity that can become a lifetime passion.
Swan River MLA Rick Wowchuk made a brief address, and representatives from Trees Canada were also on hand to make a donation to SVSFE.
All in all, it was another fantastic evening, and my hat’s off to everyone who worked so hard to put on a great evening. from the kitchen crew, to the SVSFE board – President Todd Yakielashek. along with Phil, Duane, Brock, Holly, Matt and the rest of the board and volunteers.
(And a special thanks to my helper Henry, who was busy drawing tickets for the “Pluck a Fish” and ticket auction draws for me to read out, and to Val, who was kind enough to put together a little care package of the fish and pork loin to take home!)
It was also a ton of fun to meet and say hello to many of our Cruz FM listeners – it was great to meet you all!
The fish fry is one of my favourite events of the year – the food is great, the games are fun, but the people are always the best part, without a doubt. I can’t wait to do it again next year!
