Reader here, and last night, I had that unwelcome moment of realizing that I was unintentionally late for something.
Normally, my routine is kind of messed up, but it’s been working for the past 15 years, since I started life on the morning show, back in 2011.
The alarms go off starting at 3 a.m., and after hitting the snooze button, I roll out of bed around 3:30 – 3:40, go through my morning routine, then it’s out the door and at the office, by 4 a.m., or shortly after.
If it’s a normal day, I usually wrap up the workday between noon and 12:30, then it’s a bite to eat, a nap for an hour or two, then I get on with the day, usually going to bed for the night anywhere between 11 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., before getting up and doing the whole thing all over again.
However, my routine was thrown a bit out of whack yesterday.
I had to come back in to work for a bit yesterday afternoon, to do some preparation work for next week’s “Airwaves for Health” Radiothon.
After wrapping that up, I was home by about 3 p.m.. I kicked back, watched some TV, and before I knew it, I crashed out on Ol’ Couchy.
Upon waking up, I checked my phone for the time… 7:20 p.m.. Which is fine, but it took me a minute for it to dawn on me…
Band practice started at 7 p.m.!
I play in both the Yorkton Community Concert Band and All That Jazz Big Band, and we rehearse every Tuesday night, starting at 7 p.m., and I realized I was running late.
Oops.
I quickly threw on some jeans and a t-shirt, and ran out to the car (luckily, my trumpet and music were already in the trunk), and made my way to the Yorkton Regional High School, where I sheepishly made my way to Trumpet Row, set up, and started playing, without the benefit of a warmup.
During a break in the action, I checked my phone, and noticed that our fearless band director, Larry Pearen had texted me, to see if I was coming to practice. Naturally, I replied (and apologized) from my seat in the back row in the band.
I tell you… there are few worse feelings than getting in a panic because you’re running behind schedule.
Though, I will say, if I have to be late for something, it’s better to be late for a band rehearsal, than to be late for the morning show, which has happened on the rare occasion! Fortunately, (knock on wood), it’s been a long time since that’s happened, and I aim to keep it that way!
