Reader here, and even though fall doesn’t technically arrive until September 22nd, we are indeed into September, and it does feel like summer (such as it’s been) is over, especially now, with kids in the Saskatchewan portion of the listening area back in class. (Enjoy your extra few days of summer holidays, Manitoba kids!)
Now that school is back in session, a traditional writing exercise is for students to write about “What I did on my Summer Vacation,” and tell the tales of what you got up to over the summer, whether it’s been camping trips, lake days, or just hanging out around home.
In that spirit, I thought I’d share a bit about what I got up to for my brief time off during the summer.
If you are a regular listener to Cruz FM, you may have noticed that I haven’t been around, hanging out with Grayson for much of the summer. I HAVE been in the building, though.
When I’m not on-air, I work in the newsroom, and when some of the other newsroom staff for our sister stations take time off, I have to cover their shifts. So I spent most of July on the GX94 agriculture desk, filling in for Doug Falconer, when he took his time off, and I actually do the same for Ryan Young, the ag director for 620 CKRM. So it’s been an “ag summer” for me.
However, I did take a couple of weeks off in August. What did I get up to?
Well, on August 7th, my nephew Hadley and I made the trip to Mosaic Stadium, to catch the Saskatchewan Roughriders in action, as they hammered the Ottawa Redblacks, 42-20. The game was a blast, and then we made the trip out to their place at Last Mountain Lake, where I spent the night before heading to the farm the next day.
The Riders picked up a big 42-20 win over Ottawa on Aug. 7.
On the 8th and 9th, we had a Read family reunion back home in Conquest. It was the second year in a row we held a reunion, and though there weren’t quite as many in attendance as last year, it was still a great time. It also meant I got to celebrate birthday #49 with lots of family around, which I always love.
As well, on August 12th, as I noted in my last blog, my brother Ward and I went to Cairns Field in Saskatoon, to catch the Saskatoon Berries’ Western Canadian Baseball League semifinal game against the Moose Jaw Miller Express. I managed to snag a foul ball, and the Berries beat Moose Jaw 7-4, to complete a two-game sweep, and advance to the WCBL final, where they dispatched Sylvan Lake in two straight, to claim their first-ever league title.

A week late, me, Ward and our youngest brother Barrett played the executive nine at Saskatoon’s Holiday Park Golf Course. It’s the only round I’ve played all year, and as usual, I hit some really good shots, some craptacular shots, and my putter let me down as is tradition, but we had a great time. And, I also did something rare – I managed to play an entire round of golf on ONE ball!
No ducks were harmed during the course of this particular shot!
Beyond that, I pretty much just hung out at the farm, visiting with relatives, including Hadley, who came to the farm for a few days to help out and run the skidsteer pulling trees. As well, his younger sisters, Drew and Ella came to the farm for a few days, and we had lots of fun, playing Uno, Scrabble, and cornhole. Drew’s the youngest, at 10 years old, and she and I had a great game of cornhole, that went seven rounds, before she finally beat her ol’ uncle.
I also helped Dad where I could, got some pretty good sunburn on both arms, and fit in a few naps where I could.
All in all, it was a great two weeks off.
I’m back on the ag desk next week, and then I’m actually taking another week off, during which time, my brothers and I will be heading to Regina, to catch the Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age at Mosaic Stadium. I can’ t wait!
