Went to see the movie with a friend Friday night, and if you’d heard me talk about it before seeing it you know I was excited. A movie shot, edited, completed, and then shelved for a tax write-off and locked away forever by Warner Bros. THEN it gets taken out of that locked box to let distributors bid to be the ones to release it, and finally a smaller company Ketchup picks it up and snags a wide release. It’s a great story of the little guy fighting the massive corporation, and doubly fitting considering that the movie is about the same thing. But funnier. MUCH MUCH funnier.
I may be biased by positive memories of movies like Space Jam and Looney Tunes: Back in Action, but it’s just start to finish a really funny movie. Obviously, Wile. E Coyote leads the cast, and Will Forte and Lana Condor round out the side of the good guys and more than match up with the cartoon antics. For the villains, John Cena as a high-powered corporate lawyer and Foghorn Leghorn as his domineering boss perfectly balance out the roster. Naturally, every big name Looney Tunes character makes an appearance at one point or another, but I won’t spoil where because it’d defeat some pretty good gags. I will say that Pepe Le Pew got a pretty big laugh out of the audience I watched with.
On the production side, the movie looks mostly great. For the live action components, it’s well-shot with contrast and bokeh and all the fancy film terms that the average blockbuster has done away with in favour of CGI-friendly greyscale. Speaking of CGI, seemingly nothing in the film is traditionally animated, rather putting flat colour and shading on 3d-animated models to give the impression of classic cel drawn animation. It’s seamless for the important stuff, Wile E Coyote and Roadrunner especially looking near flawless for their appearances, but some of the throw away characters obviously weren’t given as much care. Honestly, I’m super nitpicky about that kind of thing so it’s probably not something you’d notice if you aren’t looking for it.
Also it has maybe the greatest Run The Jewels needledrop I’ve ever heard. Go see it.
