Reader here, and it’s a day of anticipation for SJHL fans and the league’s final four teams, as the matchup for the Canterra Seeds Cup will be set by the end of this evening.
The Yorkton Terriers came through on the road on Monday night in North Battleford, beating the Battlefords North Stars 6-3, to even up their semifinal at three games apiece, setting up tonight’s Game Seven showdown, at Westland Insurance Arena.
Meanwhile, on Monday night in Weyburn, the Red Wings staved off elimination, dumping the Flin Flon Bombers 5-1, to force a deciding game tonight at the Whitney Forum in Flin Flon.
One really cool thing about tonight, is that it’s the first time since the 2004-2005 season, that both SJHL semifinals have gone the distance.
The Terriers are hosting a Game Seven on home ice for the first time since 2010, and it’d be great to see a packed house, to cheer on the Orange and Black.
Seventh games are always a nervous proposition, as by the end, one team gets to experience the thrill of victory, while the other team will suffer the agony of defeat.
My favourite Game Seven memory?
That would be during the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs, when my Philadelphia Flyers became just the third team to rally from a 3-0 series deficit, when they beat the Boston Bruins in seven games, on the way to an unexpected run to the Stanley Cup Final.
Not only did they come back after losing the first three games of the series, but the Fly Guys trailed 3-0 in Game Seven, before rallying to win 4-3, after Simon Gagne scored the game-winner in the third period.
Now, that’s the thrill of victory.
When it comes to the agony of defeat, the Flyers also lost the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals, falling to Wayne Gretzky and his powerhouse Edmonton Oilers in seven. But the most recent example?
It’s got to be the 2025 World Series, when the Toronto Blue Jays came oh-so-close to dethroning the Los Angeles Dodgers, dropping Game Seven of the Fall Classic in extra innings at Rogers Centre.
I admit it… I’m nervously excited to see what happens tonight between the Terriers and North Stars, but alas, I won’t be able to be there in person, as Grayson and I are MCing the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce’s “Celebrate Success” Business Awards. But you can bet I’ll be following along, and keeping the crowd at the awards ceremony up to date, on what’s happening at Westland Insurance Arena!
Attendance has been huge throughout the Terriers’ playoff run, and I know it’ll be another big crowd tonight, bringing the energy and getting loud and rowdy, to cheer on the home side, and hopefully spur them on to a berth in the SJHL championship series.
Let’s go Terriers!!!
