Just realized that while I talked about it on Friday, I totally forgot to give my thoughts on the movie! First off, if you haven’t seen it, don’t read the rest of this, go in blind, and just go see it. It’s a movie that deserves to be seen in theatres.
Now that that’s out of the way OH MY GOD. Project Hail Mary is just about as perfect as a movie can be. Not just because Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace is the movie star’s movie star and can carry a 2 and a half hour movie almost totally solo. Not just because Lord and Miller are just as funny as they’ve always been (if you don’t know, they’re the guys behind 21+22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, and producers on the Spider-Verse series). Not just because the effects out in space are possibly the best that have ever been put to screen (one sequence in IR is the most beautiful shot I’ve ever seen). And not just because Grace’s alien compatriot Rocky is a triumph of puppetry and CGI working amazingly (amaze amaze) hand-in-claw for the entire movie to the point that you’ll never be able to tell where the practical and digital effects. But because every single element comes together into a cohesive whole that somehow takes 10/10s across the board and turns them into an 11. You can rest assured that this movie is winning best VFX and best score across the board this year, with Gosling, Lord and Miller guaranteeing nominations for best actor and director, as well as best picture. If it weren’t for the fact that we’re getting Nolan’s Odyssey this year, they’d have every one in the bag, but alas.
To conclude, do yourself a favour and go see this movie. Then when you’re done with that, read the book (or listen to the audiobook, which I’ve also heard is good). And if you’ve done both or either, let me know what you thought of it in the comments!

Also also, check out this thing I made immediately after getting home from the theatre. IYKYK 👎👎
