Reader here, and it’s funny how easily we find ourselves taking things for granted in our daily lives.
And it’s equally wild how when one of those things is taken away, it can have a big impact.
I’ve found myself in that situation throughout the month of December, as earlier this month, my car – the 2008 Honda Civic I call “Quicksilver” – decided to conk out on me on one of the coldest days of the year.
It couldn’t have been parked in my driveway when it happened. No, it was parked outside of Dollarama, and the car ended up sitting there over the weekend, before I could get it towed to the shop.
There it sat, where it was diagnosed as having a bad ignition cylinder, that made it difficult to insert the key, and when I did get it in there, I couldn’t turn the key at all. Not ideal.
What made it worse, is that the part ended up being back-ordered, and just when it would arrive was up in the air.
In the meantime, the boss had pity on me, and was kind enough to allow me to use a work vehicle to get myself back and forth to work and home until the repairs were completed.
And over Christmas, I ended up getting a great rental vehicle to get me home to the farm for my four-day holiday break.
However, I got some good news yesterday, as folks at the shop called me to let me know the fix was done, and Quicksilver was ready to roll once again!
I swung by the dealership this morning to pick up my ride, and all is once again right in the world!
But as I say, when it comes to the everyday, normal tasks, like trips to the grocery store or the dentist, it’s easy to forget how much we use our vehicles in daily life.
It’s definitely a first world problem, and I know I’m fortunate to have a vehicle and be able to afford the repairs (though I will have to tighten the belt for a while), but I’m sure glad to have my car back and mobile once again, so I can hit the road for things like my niece’s ringette games or nephew’s hockey games, or trips outside Yorkton city limits!
So that’s certainly a positive way for me to roll into the new year, with my car back where it belongs!
And since me and Quicksilver are together again, only one song felt right on a momentous day like this…
