Reader here!
Today, I want to chat about birthdays, specifically those milestone birthdays.
Of course, the first comes when we’re born. That’s always a special one. Then, we turn one. A whole year in the books.
The next big one is five. Then, when we turn 10, that’s a fun one – double digits! A whole decade.
A couple of other big ones happen in our teens. Turning 13 means we are, in fact, teenagers. 16 means you can get your driver’s licence, 18 allows you to vote, and you become an adult.
Of course, depending where you live, 18 or 19 also means you can drink legally.
After that, basically all of the birthdays that end in “0” are the ones that we celebrate.
The reason I mention this? Over the weekend, our immediate family converged at my brother Ward’s house in Saskatoon, to celebrate our Mom’s 70th birthday! Her birthday is actually on the 23rd, which is in the middle of the week, so we came up with a date when we could all get together.
Our mom, the fabulous Lorna Read, isn’t one for huge gatherings, and we know that for her, the important thing is to have our family together, meaning Dad, her boys, and their families.
So we each brought a bunch of food, Ward did an amazingly delicious brisket in his Big Green Egg, and we ate, visited, relaxed and played games. All of my nieces and nephew were able to be there, and it was just a great time.
My mom had a blast, and that’s what it was all about, and it made the effort worth it.
Next up, in 2026, my Dad turns 70, and my youngest niece, Drew, will be 10! Where does the time go?
And in 2027, I hit a milestone of my own, when I turn 50 – a whole half-century! (My parents will also celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2027, too!)
I used to worry about getting “old,” but I’ll be happy just to still be around, witnessing all of the great moments and milestones for my family and friends.
Every day is a blessing, and when you get to mark those special occasions with those you love, there’s really nothing better! When you get a chance to celebrate, take advantage, and make some magical moments, because beyond the cakes and gifts, the time together and memories made are what really matter.
So, in honour of my Mom, here’s a little birthday tune!
