After the trailer leaked a few weeks back, we’ve finally got our full first look at the new Spider-Man movie (not counting all the 5 second clips that were posted all over the internet yesterday), and it looks like a real change in tone compared to the previous trilogy of movies. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is finally out of the shadow of Iron Man, and back to where everybody wanted to see him: broke, sad, and fighting a guy throwing boomerangs. It is cool getting to see some of the lower-grade baddies Spidey’s going to be fighting in the movie beyond the big match-up with Scorpion and the unknown, apparently body-swapping villain teased in the trailer. That was one of the better parts of the first of Holland’s trilogy, people like the Shocker popping up to add a little more flavour to the non-world-ending fights. Not to say the big villain isn’t great either, I’m glad to see them finally bring Michael Mando back after his cameo appearance of a pre-Scorpion Mac Gargan in Homecoming.
It’s not just new villains showing up either, the trend is continuing with Spider-Man crossing over with other superheroes (and at least one anti-hero): Mark Ruffalo is returning, this time with no Hulk in sight, and Jon Bernthal making the jump from the small screen to bring Punisher to theatres. A quick shot of web keeps him from using up the singular f-bomb a pg-13 movie is entitled to, but we’ll see if that stops him permanently or if this will be the first Spider-Man movie to drop one.
And of course, the trailer makes sure to reassure us that Zendaya’s MJ will be returning in some capacity for this movie after the last left her presence up in the air. A good call, I don’t think fans would’ve taken her exclusion very well.
