Reader here!
Well, Super Bowl 60 has come and gone, and even though neither of my teams (the Tennessee Titans and Philadelphia Eagles) made it to the big game, I still hunkered down on the couch to catch the NFL’s championship game.
I had no real rooting interest in the game, but I’ll be real with you. I was cheering for the Seattle Seahawks all the way.
As a Titans fan, I was still pretty ticked off with the firing of head coach Mike Vrabel, who took a year off, before taking the Pats’ head coaching job, and promptly leading New England to the precipice of a championship. That doesn’t mean I wanted him to get that championship ring, though. That would mean cheering for the New England Patriots… something that will NEVER happen!
So, I guess I DID have an interest in the outcome, after all!
Ultimately, I wound up happy, as the Seahawks came out on top, riding their “Dark Side” defense and the powerful running of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to a 29-13 win in Santa Clara, California, earning a second Super Bowl title for the Seahawks.
That had to have felt great to the “12s” – the Seahawks fans who had to live with the memories of the 2015 title game, after Seattle got too cute late in the game, and decided against doing the obvious, most simple thing, and handing the ball off to Marshawn Lynch, who more than likely would’ve pounded in the rock from the 1, and scoring the game-clinching TD. Instead, the Hawks passed, and New England’s Malcolm Butler made a game-saving interception at the goal line, and the Patriots escaped with a 28-24 win.
I mentioned the Seahawks defense. They had Pats’ QB Drake Maye running for his life all game long, sacking him six times, and taking an interception back for a major.
And let’s not forget Sam Darnold. Drafted by the New York Jets he spent three rough seasons there, before they shipped him off to the Carolina Panthers, where he spent two years, before a brief stint in San Francisco, before a one-season stay in Minnesota, where he had a career year. However, the Vikings made the decision to cut him loose, and he found his way to the Pacific Northwest.
The rest, as they say, is history, as Sam Darnold is now, and will forever be, a Super Bowl champion!
The game wasn’t an display of high-powered offence, but a defensive battle, and the Seahawks’ defense was by far, the star of the game.
Well, along with Bad Bunny!
I loved the halftime show. Bad Bunny, along with special guests Lady Gaga and fellow Puerto Rican Ricky Martin put on a heck of a show – in a celebration of Puerto Rican and Latin American music and culture, that had people all over the world dancing.
So this year’s Super Bowl is in the books. With that out of the way, we can turn our attention fully toward the Winter Games! Go Canada, Go!
Remember this classic, written by David Foster, for the ’88 Winter Games in Calgary?
