Happy Monday! Reader here, with a Proud Uncle Moment!
Over the weekend, even though I wasn’t able to be there in person, I was able to fire up LiveBarn and catch my youngest niece, Drew, in action on the ice at the Communiskate in Emerald Park, playing some ringette.

Thank goodness for LiveBarn! It lets Uncle Craig catch the kids’ games when he can’t be there in person!
She’s nine years old, in her second year playing, and the team rotates positions for their games. Yesterday, she got to don the pads and play in goal.
Drew did pretty darn good, too, making some great saves, and the two teams, both from the Buffalo Plains Ringette Association, which features kids from Balgonie, Emerald Park, White City, Pilot Butte and the surrounding areas, played to a 4-4 ties.
I think she still prefers playing out, particularly on defense, just like her oldest sister, Sofie, who has been playing for many years, continuing into her first year of University. She still suits up for the Buffalo Plains U19B Blitz, and they’re a heck of a team, too, winning several tournaments and continually being one of their top teams in their league, year after year.
Growing up, I was (and I guess, I still am) the oldest of four boys in my family, and we all were hockey players. I didn’t play as long as my brothers, as I switched over to basketball in high school.
The guys all continued to play right through Grade 12. And my youngest brother Barrett still plays rec hockey in Saskatoon.
And my nephew is playing hockey this season with the Lumsden Lions U18B squad, and just picked up his first league shutout over the weekend!
It’s great to see the kids being active on the ice and carrying on the tradition and playing the games they love, especially when they’re really young and learning the game. There’s no pressure… they’re just having fun with their friends, improving their skills, and enjoying a big ol’ plate of rink fries after the game.
And as they get older, they keep playing, and improving, and see how far their skills and dreams can take them!
That’s what it’s all about!
I haven’t been able to get out too much to the rink yet this year, but I’m planning to make the trip now that we’re into the new year. Uncle can’t wait to see the kids in action!
Not to mention, I could use a rink burger and a plate of fries and gravy myself! Great… Now I’m hungry!
This one’s for the young goalies in my family!
