Reader here, and, well, the holiday season is well and truly over.
Christmas has come and gone, and New Year’s celebrations are over for another year, so we have 12 months to prepare for the holidays to return.
Along with Christmas, came the traditional feasts. From all kinds of treats on baking trays brought into the station by our fantastic listeners and clients, to the big family meals, with turkey, ham and all the fixins’. Especially stuffing. I’m a sucker for stuffing, especially my Mom’s. I’m a little bit biased, but Mom’s is the best. Seasoned just right, not too dry, not too moist… just perfect!
Now, the danger with all of the baking around, is that I have to be careful, in as much as I have to watch my blood sugar. But I won’t lie… I crushed my share of tasty treats. But, I’ve finished off my supply of Christmas baking, so I don’t have to worry about succumbing to temptation.
Between all the food, lots of time kicking back visiting with family and friends, and holding down the couch watching all my favourite holiday movies and specials, I added a pound or two, and I need to get up and get moving again!
And January provides a perfect opportunity to do so, as it’s Active Living Month in the City of Yorkton!
If you enjoy being outside, you can get out and enjoy walking and running outside, and strap on your skates and hit the outdoor rinks. (It’s tough to beat a fun game of shinny on an ODR, on a nice winter day, am I right?)
But, if you want to take advantage of the city’s indoor recreation facilities, this month provides ample opportunity to do so!
Here are just a few examples of what’s available this month, courtesy of the Yorkton Parks and Recreation Facebook page!
Keep in mind that the free walking track for January also extends to the track at the Gloria Hayden Community Centre, as well!
If you’re looking to try out something new, give these a try! Other activities include an Urban Pole clinic on the Flexihall track on January 14th, and Dance Aerobics seesions, also in the Flexihall. Or maybe you like being in the water… Get up early and try out the Aquacize boot camp sessions!
I know I said that I don’t make any big grandiose New Year’s resolutions, as I feel like I set myself up to fail.
But if there is one thing I DO want to focus on this year, it’s improving my overall fitness level. I’m not looking to drop weight, but just to boost my strength and cardiovascular health.
(That said, all the snow shoveling I’ve been doing this winter has certainly been helping out with that!)
And yes, I could stand to finetune my diet, and cut out the fat and salt I consume, as I am guilty of eating too much fast food, late evening bags of chips, and Reeses!
So that’s my goal. I want to be healthier, not just for myself, but for my family and friends. I want to be around for them. I want to have years of watching my nieces and nephew do all the awesome stuff ahead of them, and I want to enjoy the milestones for everyone, from birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings, babies… all that great stuff!
So it’s time to hold myself accountable and take better care of myself. Health first, then everything else will fall into place!
Here’s one of my favourite tunes to blast when I’m getting physical (no, not “Let’s Get Physical” by Olivia Newton-John!) It’s the Foo Fighters, of course! (I can’t wait to see these guys in Regina this fall!)
Let’s put in the work in 2026!
