Reader’s Unexpectedly Funny Trip to the Dentist

Reader here, and I have a question for you today…

Have you ever found yourself unexpectedly laughing and giggling in a situation that normally wouldn’t inspire laughter, or an instance in which it might be inappropriate to do so?

I found myself in that position yesterday, while at the dentist’s office.

I had an appointment to go in and get a couple of fillings done, and after waiting a few minutes for my name to be called, I settled into the chair (which, as an aside, are incredibly comfy, to the point that I’d seriously like a dentist chair for my house!).

After getting the injection to freeze up my face, and the raincoat was locked in to catch the mess as they worked, the dentist got to work.

She proceeded to do some drilling and prep work to put in the filling, when it happened…

I happened to look up, and caught the dentist at the perfect angle.

She was wearing glasses, with magnifying/microscopic lenses to help see to do the delicate oral work.  But because of those magnifying lenses, I couldn’t see her actual eyes, and the magnifiers were big white barrels with black lenses, and I started to laugh, as from my vantage point, it looked like there were big googly Muppet eyes peeking over a surgical mask.

I wish I’d had my phone in my hand to capture it – it was priceless!

It was one of those things that once I saw it, I couldn’t un-see it, and from that point on, every few moments I’d catch myself looking up to see that, and I’d start giggling all over again!

When I told the dental assistant that helped out on my work, she laughed and asked if it was any particular Muppet that I was reminded of.

I replied, “Actually, do you remember Scooter?”

Too funny!

While we’re on the subject of unexpected laugher at odd moments, it also brings to mind when my brothers and I were at my great aunt’s funeral several years ago.

(There’s a sentence you don’t hear every day!)

During one of the hymns being sung, there was a line that included the phrase “perfect submission.”

The problem with this, is that my brothers and I were big into wrestling at the time, and our minds all immediately went to the same place… submission wrestling!

My goodness.  The four of us (who were pall bearers, by the way!) started giggling, and to anyone who might’ve seen us from behind may have seen our shoulders shaking, and thought we were crying.

Nope, it was silent (as much as possible) laughter.

And in a way, it was a wee bit fitting, because her late husband, who passed away many years before, was a huge Stampede Wrestling fan, to the point of dropping everything, even while driving the grain truck during harvest, to be in front of the tube in time for the weekly “ring-a-ding-dong-dandy.”  I think he would’ve seen the humour in the situation!

Unexpected laughter.  When it hits, all you can do is ride it out!

Anyhoo, taking a sharp turn, in closing, here’s another of my favourite Christmas tunes, to help keep the holiday spirit flowing!
