Early on this morning I was talking about a slightly misleading headline that got me to click through a website (discussing a 50 million dollar Fabergé egg shattering… a record at auction :/), but should’ve known that, while it was bad, things can always be worse with the addition of AI!
Yeah, google is testing out AI headlines for articles that come up on their discover tab that are inflammatory at best and flat-out wrong at worst. For example, one article theorizing about what the price of the recently announced Steam Machine could be had it’s headline changed to “Steam Machine price revealed!” which just makes the website itself look scummy if people aren’t aware of what google’s actually doing here.
It’s not just headlines to worry about though, oh no, it’s also similarly inaccurate AI summaries accompanying original headlines so they can misrepresent the content while they’re at it. Helpfully at least, it’s all accompanied by a disclaimer that says the AI might make mistakes. Seems to me like the mistakes could’ve been avoided by not stuffing AI in where it’s needed, but I guess that’s why I don’t work in AI enablement at google lol
