Reader’s Christmas Spirit Meter is rising!

Reader here!

Remember last week, how I said I’m slowly getting into the Christmas spirit, even though there’s pretty much no snow on the ground?  Well, the holiday cheer is flowing through the veins a lot more now!

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to drive our decorated station vehicle in the Legacy Co-op Santa Claus Parade, put on by the Yorkton Business Improvement District.

It was a fantastic time, with the parade getting going a little after 5 p.m..  This time of year means it’s already dark by then, so all of the floats were lit up and looking great.

Speaking of the floats, there was somewhere in the neighbourhood of 70 entries in the parade, which was great to see, and a lot of creative floats at that.  I wish I had gone around and snapped some photos before the parade got going.

But the best part of the parade?  Seeing a TON of people lining the parade route along Broadway Avenue!   This was my view of the parade!

There were so many smiling faces, and it was great being able to wave and wish everybody a Merry Christmas!  How do you not get into the spirit of the season when you get to experience that?

That was my view of the parade route, in a tidy 18-second timelapse video!

I think it’s safe to say now that the Christmas season is truly upon us.  The decorations are on the light standards around the city, and the Santa Claus Parade is in the books.

Not only that, but on Friday, the Yorkton Salvation Army kicked off its Christmas Kettle campaign, working to raise money to put together Christmas hampers for families in need.

Unfortunately, with the rising cost of living, many families are feeling the financial pinch, and the need for the Food Bank continues to grow.

Christmas Kettles can be found in the Parkland Mall at Canadian Tire, and outside Mano’s Restaurant, with tap machines also at Save On Foods, Walmart and Superstore.
This year’s fundraising goal is $125-thousand, to put together Christmas hampers, and to support the food bank throughout the year, along with a new community response vehicle.
The Salvation Army will also be accepting donations for the Food Bank when the CPKC Holiday Train makes stops in both Bredenbury and Yorkton on Saturday, December 6th, with perfomances by country artists Jade Eagleson and Teigan Gayse.
As well, don’t forget that the “Drive Away Hunger” food drive is also on now through December 6 at Yorkton Hyundai.  They’re accepting donations of non-perishable food items of monetary donations for the “Love Lives Here” bus.
It’s all about making sure that no families go hungry over the holiday season.
And one other thing to keep in mind – the Yorkton Lions Club “Wonders of Winter” opens this Friday (November 28) at the Yorkton City Campground!  load up the vehicle with family or friends, fill some thermoses with hot chocolate, and go enjoy the fantastic light displays.  It’s Year #2, so you know it’ll be bigger and better in 2025!
And those are just some of the happenings in Yorkton!  Local communities throughout the listening area are hosting holiday activities, including the Hometown Christmas celebrations in Melville this Friday (Nov. 28), with a ton of family-friendly activities, and the Canora Winter Lights Festival, which runs from November 29th to December 6th.  That’s always a blast!
Make sure you get out and explore, and enjoy what our local communities have to offer, and soak in a big dose of the Christmas Spirit in the process!
