Reader here, and today, I’m talking pets.
Growing up on the farm, we’ve always had dogs and cats.
From the time I was little, until I was into my early to mid teens, we had a couple of awesome dogs on the farm that grew up with my brothers and I
One was Sarge, our German Shepherd. He loved to dig, roam around the farm, and, on occasion, stroll the mile from our farm into town, often showing up in the school yard, making me temporarily cool, as everybody liked my dog! He also had a knack for simply sitting down whenever any of us tried riding him, causing us to tumble off his back onto the ground.
The other was Tubby, our little grey “Heinz 57” mutt. He had a lot of Cocker Spaniel and Pomeranian in him, and bits of other breeds we couldn’t quite figure out.
He and Sarge got on well most of the time, though when they got to scrappin’, we kids ran in the house because they meant business at the time! Though the could be rough on each other, with us kids, they were exceedingly gentle.
After they both passed, we had several Shepherd-Collie crosses, with fun names like Killer, Champ and Shep, that all didn’t live long, but Jaws did! We had Jaws for many years, and he was a good pup, though he did have a habit of getting “amorous,” shall we say, with random things like tarps and cushions off lawn furniture! Precious memories! Hahaha!
After Jaws died, we had Mike, the Golden Retriever, who is the only dog I’ve ever seen that didn’t like to go swim around in the dugout to clean off and cool off. Also, he was great at the first part of “Fetch.” Throw a ball or stick, and he’d happily go get it. Dropping it to let you throw it again? Not his thing!
That’s also a recurring trait in our dog that roams the farm now, our German Shepherd Lexi, the first girl dog we’ve had! She is full of energy, and loves to run and play, chase birds, and bark at coyotes in the middle of the night! Sometimes while we’re working around the farmyard, she can cause a bit of chaos, but we love her anyhow!

Our dogs have never been inside dogs. They have their doghouses outside, and they have the run of the place.
As do the cats. We’ve had countless cats over the years, and I won’t lie, I’ve never had a big attachment to them. They do their thing around the farm, and we do ours, but they’ve never really been pets, per se. However, they’ve gotten lots more TLC over the last couple of decades, since my nieces and nephew arrived on the scene! They love the kitties (and the dogs!)
That brings me to life in Yorkton. I’ve lived here since 2006, and I’ve never had pets of my own here. I would LOVE to have a dog, but I’ve always rented, and don’t know if the spaces I’ve lived in are necessarily pet-friendly, when it comes to canines.
And if I were to ever get a dog, I’d want to ensure it had lots of space, and that I’d have the means, money-wise, to care for it in the way it deserves.
So, it’s not the right time for me to have a dog. Someday…
But, I’ve been thinking more about something I could more readily handle… fish!
I have the aquarium and accessories, I just need to get it ready!
I’ve always found fish to be relaxing. Sometime, I’ll go to YouTube and just put on aquarium videos with soothing music, and just relax.
But if I’m going to get some fish, I’d better do some research and know what I’m getting into.
Do you guys have any tips for a first-time fish owner? I’m all ears!
