What’s up, everybody? Reader here, and tomorrow is the big day… Halloween!
Kids will be dressing up in their costumes, ranging from cute and cuddly, to macabre, and heading door to door, in search of candy, so make sure that when you’re on the road, you’re watching out for a ton of excited youngsters.
That goes for grown-ups, as well, as this year, Halloween falls on a Friday, so you know there’ll be lots of Halloween parties, too.
We want to make sure everyone has a safe and Happy Halloween!
Over the years, I dressed up as everything from a Smurf, to Spider-Man and He-Man, to Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Jackson, a beach bum, a doctor, convict, and even a casual werewolf!
It was always a blast when my brothers and I would go out trick or treating around Conquest, and load up on candy. Some places, you knew what you’d be getting, like the one fellow who always gave each kid a quarter. One of our teachers always made us sing before handing over the loot. (We HATED that!) And we always loved hitting the houses that gave out full-sized chocolate bars, or even a can of pop – those were a big score!
When we got home, we’d all dump out our treat bags on the living room floor and sort out our loot, and there were always certain things we’d leave for last. Get the least-favourite candy out of the way first, and save the best for last.
For me? That meant leaving the Reese Peanut Butter Cups until the end. They were always my fave!
Some stuff would always go uneaten, like BBBBBats (remember those rectangular chunks of pink taffy on a stick?), candy kisses, an of course, candy corn (repellent, am I right?)
But one thing I always enjoyed, and seems to have disappeared, are popcorn balls. Remember them?

Popcorn, melted-down marshmallows, and other ingredients, sometimes featuring caramel or ju-jubes, fashioned into baseball-sized chunks of goodness.
Delicious! Usually, each year, we’d always get 2 or 3 of ’em, and I loved them.
Here’s Martha Stewart showing how she makes them!
Don’t those look good?
I’m not sure whether anyone makes them anymore. I know in my trick or treating days, they slowly dwindled away. Whether people decided they were too much work to make, or people became more wary of food allergies, or of their kids taking homemade treats from strangers, I suppose worries over damage to teeth when biting into unpopped kernels could be a worry, too. I don’t know!
All I know, is that I could sure go for a good popcorn ball and a scary movie right now!
In any event, I hope you all have a blast this Halloween! And in the spirit of the occasion, here’s one of the greatest music videos of all-time… enjoy!
