So after the big splash the “Dire Wolf” pups a few months back made, the company behind it is setting their sights higher (by at least 6 feet) in reviving the Moa. The Moa was a 12 foot tall bird native to what is now Aotearoa/New Zealand that went extinct about 600 years ago. Definitely an odd lateral move after the broad appeal of the dire wolves, but one that makes a lot more sense when you consider that Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings director, Kiwi, and apparently a collector of Moa bones) is one of the company’s major investors.
Now, the question has to be raised: how are they going to bring this thing back? Like, with the wolves you have a ton of different canine breeds to cross reference and choose as starting points, but with the moa that’s not exactly an option with very few living relatives. Maybe they’ll go really out there, and just make a giant kiwi? I’d be on board for that. Ooh, or maybe if they’re looking for additional investors they could reach out to PBS for funding and make one with yellow feathers for a modern take on Big Bird! Plenty of options!
