Just the other day, I spent what felt like hours clearing out a pathway from all the snow that had accumulated. The temperatures had finally risen a bit, and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to make some progress. I shoveled and shoveled, feeling a sense of accomplishment as the path became clear and accessible once again. But the very next day, it snowed again!
Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand the importance of keeping our surroundings safe and accessible during snowy conditions. Shoveling snow ensures that we can move around freely, and it minimizes the risk of accidents and injuries. But sometimes, it feels like a never-ending battle.
The constant cycle of shoveling snow only to have more come down the next day can be frustrating, to say the least. It can make us question the point of all our efforts. Why bother shoveling when it feels like we’re just going to have to do it all over again?
Well, here’s what I’ve come to realize: shoveling snow, even if it’s about to snow again, has its merits. Firstly, it’s an excellent way to stay active and get some exercise. You may not realize it, but shoveling snow can be quite the workout! It engages various muscle groups and gets your heart rate up, providing you with a mini cardio session. I actually skip the gym to shovel snow since it takes a lot of energy.
Secondly, by shoveling snow, we’re taking proactive measures to ensure our safety and the safety of others. Clearing pathways, driveways, and sidewalks allows for easier navigation, especially for those who may have mobility challenges. It’s a small gesture that can have a significant impact on someone’s ability to move around freely.
Moreover, shoveling snow can be a therapeutic activity. There’s something oddly satisfying about seeing a clean, snow-free path emerge from the white blanket that covers our surroundings. All of that on top of putting in your earbuds and blasting your favourite tunes (or streaming Fox FM) makes it pretty enjoyable!
So, while it may feel discouraging to shovel snow only for more to fall the next day, let’s remember the importance of our efforts. It’s not just about the end result; it’s about the physical activity, the safety, and the therapeutic benefits. Stay warm!
