Reader scores at the thrift shop!

Hey, everybody! Reader here!

I’m sure a lot of you are like me, and like to check out second-hand stores and garage sales, trying to scope out bargains, or find those random things that some people are happy to get rid of, but you just happen to be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

That happened with me over the weekend, when I took a stroll through Value Village, and stumbled upon a couple of cool finds.

Firstly, I found a few CD’s that hadn’t made their way into my collection. I know most people have switched to streaming services, but I still like having the physical copy in my collection, especially if, for some reason, I can’t find them in the digital realm.

I found these over the weekend. You can’t go wrong with ZZ Top’s greatest hits, or Boyz II Men’s “Cooleyhighharmony,” which was one of my favourite albums during my teen years. But the real surprise find was Kish’s “Order From Chaos!” That one takes me back!

That’s the case for a little Canadian Hip-Hop gem from 1991, that I found. The album is “Order From Chaos” by Kish, featuring the track “I Rhyme the World in 80 Days.” I could not find it anywhere on any of the streaming services, but suddenly, there was the CD on the rack, for $1.99. Sold.

Couple that with ZZ Top’s “Greatest Hits” and another of my favourite albums from my teen years, Boyz II Men’s “Cooleyhighharmony,” and it was a pretty good haul.

But then, in the movie aisle, I found a DVD I’d been seeking for ages.

I’ve got a number of disaster flicks already, including “Airport,”, “Earthquake,” “Rollercoaster” and “Hindenburg,” along with 1974’s classic “The Towering Inferno,” produced and directed by the “Master of Disaster” Irwin Allen, starring Paul Newman, Steve McQueen and an all-star cast, but I didn’t have his film that preceded it. But lo and behold, there it was… “The Poseidon Adventure.”

Now, I can kick back and watch a true disaster double, triple even quadruple feature if I want!

The great thing about bargain-hunting at garage sales and second hand shops, is that you can find virtually anything.

For example, I’m a big reader. Reader by name, reader in my spare time.

I have picked up far more books second-hand over the past few years, than I’ve bought brand-new. It’s certainly more cost effective, as the price of books nowadays is obscenely expensive, and often, you can find some old favourites that are out of print, but still exist on dusty bookshelves somewhere, just waiting for someone to discover them once again.

And of course, when it comes to fashion, thrift shops can be a gold mine.

Whether it’s for everyday wear, or something to wear for a Halloween costume, or athletic wear for the gym or at the game, you never know what you might find.

Check out the throwback Rider jersey I’m sporting in the photo to the left… I found that second-hand, and paid about 15 to 20 bucks for it. I have four different Rider jerseys, plus a bunch of hats, shirts and a bunnyhug to display my love for the Green and White.

But that second-hand jersey is my go-to when I head to Mosaic Stadium!

I’m so glad I went thrift-shopping that day!

So, don’t turn up your nose at shopping for second-hand stuff. What one person may no longer have use for, another person might just find in it a hidden treasure.

Happy bargain-hunting!
