Reader’s Quick Weekend Road Trip

Hey, everybody! Reader here, and over the weekend, I found myself with nothing going on, and I felt a little bit of wanderlust. So, I decided to jump in the car and take a drive down Highway 10…

I paid a visit to Melville, did a bit of shopping, and had a bite to eat before heading back. Didn’t do anything too wild and crazy, but sometimes, you just need to hop in the car and take a road trip.

There’s nothing quite like the freedom of the open road, where every mile feels like a new beginning, and the endless horizon invites you to explore and discover something new. Leave your worries in the rearview mirror, roll down the windows, and feel the gentle breeze caress your face as it carries away your stress (in my case, literally, as my car has no air conditioning… my AC is driving with the windows down!) Take your time to savor each moment, whether it’s a stop at a roadside restaurant to grab some food, a stroll through a small town to check out a local landmark, or simply admiring the changing landscapes and seasons.

For example, on another occasion, a couple of years ago, I took a drive up Highway 9 to Canora, and wound up spending a few hours exploring the toy and autograph museum. It was really cool. It was one of those places that I’d noticed on a previous visit, but didn’t have time to stop. But it was well worth the trip. The only thing missing from that particular trip, was a stop at Raymond’s! (If you know, you know!)

It’s something I want to do a little more of, despite the price of gas being completely stupid… just picking a random spot, and taking a day trip, to see what’s out there!

Me and my new (to me) ride in 2013, when I picked up Quicksilver in Calgary!

Regardless of where you’re going, just let the journey be slow and unhurried, allowing yourself to soak in the beauty that surrounds you. Bask in the fact that you have nowhere specific to be, and that you don’t have to be in a hurry to get there.

Relax as you drive, finding peace in the rhythm of the road. Listen to your favorite tunes (might I suggest 94.1 Cruz FM?), have heartfelt conversations with a travel buddy, or simply enjoy the silence and serenity, and let the drive clear your mind. The road trip isn’t just about reaching a destination – it’s about finding joy and tranquility in the journey itself.

Embrace the spontaneity, the unexpected turns, and the little surprises along the way. Let the road lead you to new adventures, some laughter, and a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you.

What’s the best random road trip you’ve ever taken?

BONUS TRACK: I do love a great driving track. Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats have a ton of ’em, including the title track from their new album. Check it out!
