What’s up, everybody? Reader here.
It some ways, I’m a lot like Chewbacca, the seven-foot tall Wookie, from Star Wars fame.
When I get lazy and forget to shave for a while, I turn into a hairy beast.
But, I also tend to think with my stomach! And when I need something to fill that gap, often, there’s nothing I like better than a simple sandwich.
What’s great, about sandwiches, is that you can make them out of virtually anything, and you’re limited only by your imagination (and what you’ve got in the fridge!)
You can use all types of bread or wraps, meats, cheeses, peanut butter and jam or honey, veggies, dressings, condiments and seasonings… I’m getting hungry just typing this!
What are some of my favourites?
Well, as noted in the video above, I love a good ham and cheese, as well as a clubhouse, with layers of savory ham, turkey and bacon, with some fresh lettuce, tomato, mayo and cheese, nestled between layers of toast. (Cue Homer Simpson drool…)
I’ve come to love a good Philly Cheesesteak, too. The combination of seasoned beef, gooey cheese, sauteed onions (and peppers) on a good roll is so delicious. A goal of mine is to get to Philadelphia someday, mainly to watch my Flyers play in their home arena, but also to eat as many different cheeseteaks as possible!
I also like to try some different things, such as a delicious Cuban Sandwich I had at Target Field in Minneapolis a few years ago, during a Twins-Jays game.
You can’t go wrong with some good grilled cheese. Served with ketchup in my case. I’m not one to dunk my grilled cheese in tomato soup – I prefer ketchup!
Sometimes, I like to get a bit experimental, as well.
And, of course, a nice easy sub is tasty, too. The trick is to hold ’em together!
I think Fred Penner put it best…
I was curious to see if my sammich preferences matched up with some other popular styles across the country. Here’s what I found, when if comes to some popular Canadian sandwiches:
First up, we have the classic Montreal smoked meat sandwich. This iconic sandwich consists of thinly sliced smoked meat piled high on rye bread and topped with mustard. It’s a favorite among locals and tourists alike and is a must-try when visiting Montreal. Now, I’ve never been to Montreal, but any smoked meat sandwich I’ve ever had has been a winner. I’ll never turn one down!
Next on the list is the famous peameal bacon sandwich. This delicacy features peameal bacon, also known as Canadian bacon, on a soft bun with toppings like lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Hey… it’s bacon. A BLT on a bun. What’s not to love?
Another popular sandwich in Canada is the lobster roll. Made with fresh lobster meat tossed in a creamy dressing and served on a buttered and toasted bun, this seafood sandwich is considered a true delicacy. It’s a bit more on the pricey side, but many folks say it’s definitely worth the splurge for a special treat. I’ve never had one myself, but I’d give it a try.
Last but not least, we have the classic poutine sandwich. This indulgent creation features crispy French fries, cheese curds, and gravy stuffed between two slices of bread. It’s a messy but delicious sandwich that is sure to please any comfort food lover. I do love poutine, though I don’t know if I’d want it as a sandwich. I s’pose it’s a case of “don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.”
In any event, there’s really never a bad time for a sandwich. Quick to make, portable and tasty. You can’t go wrong making a sandwich.
Well, unless you’re Mr. Bean…
